Desford Charity Fields

The Barns Charity Fields in Desford

Who are we and what do we do?

The Barns Charity has existed for a long time, it performs an educational role and earns its income from managing three wildflower fields in Desford.

How long has it existed?

In 1729 William Barns left £100 to the parish to be used for the education of the poor and deserving. The money was used to buy land in Desford Parish.

What is our educational role?

We use our income to provide small grants to young people from the parish to buy equipment, books etc for their apprenticeships or Higher Education studies.

We take Rainbows, Brownies, Cubs and students from the local academy to visit and study the site.

How do we protect the biodiversity of the Fields?

Two of the fields qualify for Local Wildlife Site status due to their biodiversity. The fields are bordered by mature hedges and a river where kingfishers are recorded.
